Mobile Site Speed’s Effect in Google’s New Algorithm
One very important factor when creating a website is the site speed for mobile. This metric is almost as important as the content you put on the site and design for users, but soon site speed will be as important to google with their new algorithm unfolding soon. Gary Illyes from Google said at the Search Marketing Summit in Sydney that Google will be updating the page speed ranking factor to specifically look at the page speed of your mobile pages when it comes to the mobile-friendly algorithm. This new site speed ranking factor will be a major factor in the next mobile-friendly update.
Today, desktop pages’ loading speeds are a factor in ranking potential, but not in mobile. This means you can have an incredibly fast desktop site speed and if your mobile speed is really slow, it doesn’t even hurt your rankings. Even most of Google’s ranking signals are based on your desktop metrics and not mobile, but always keep in mind that having a mobile-friendly site is extremely important in ranking factors.
This update is still a few months out from being launched and is in the “planning phases” according to Gary on twitter.
This is very important to keep in mind now if you are building a new site. Even if your site is existent and mobile friendly, you need to continually optimize the speed. When this new algorithm is released, those with no focus on mobile speed with be penalized and may even see their rankings drop by huge margins.
